Gum Disease

Gum Disease and Recession

Healthy gums are necessary for your teeth and heart health. Your gums cover and protect the roots of your teeth and if they become diseased or recessed, it can create numerous problems from sensitivity, to decay, to tooth and bone loss. Routine check-ups and dental cleanings are essential for keeping your gums healthy.

Gum disease normally occurs as a progressive process. Gingivitis (the inflammation of the gums) is a precursor to gum disease. If left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis (gum disease). Periodontal disease causes the gum to pull away from the teeth and form pockets. Plaque gets into these pockets, and the gums can become infected. This process then starts to break down the bone and connective tissue that holds your teeth in place. When this occurs, tooth loss usually follows. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Plaque is the main cause of gum disease.  Routine cleanings and check-ups are the cornerstones of preventing this pattern of disease and tooth loss.

Gum recession is another area associated with gum disease and occurs when someone has experienced a loss of gum tissue. Although it is a common condition, many people do not realize it is happening until the later stages. Gum recession can expose the roots of the tooth to bacteria and plaque, which can lead to decay. There are many causes of gum recession:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Physical wear of the gums (vigorous tooth brushing or over-brushing)
  • Inflammation of the gums
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Smoking or tobacco use

Dr. Martowski is prepared and equipped to handle these issues but advises that prevention is truly the best medicine. Be sure to schedule your regular cleanings and do your part to protect your gums. Your teeth will thank you!
